The bouleuterion or assembly hall

Glanum's "bouleuterion" is the Hellenistic-style assembly hall where the city's notables gathered.

Constructed in « grand appareil »   at the end of the 2nd century B.C., it comprises a rectangular open-air hall surrounded by tiers on three sides and a wide portico with three columns.

The auditorium features a small pulpit for the speaker and a central circular altar decorated with a garland and bulls' heads, a reproduction of which can be seen on the site. It has a crown in the form of an Ionic capital surmounted by papyrus scrolls on the sides of which are engraved dolphins, symbols of fidelity to the law.

In early Roman times, the northern part of the bouleuterion was covered by the construction of the geminate temple perimeter. The southern part, however, was restored and used for a time as a curia.

Like the dromos well, this Hellenistic monument is unique in France!
